CITY OF BROWNWOOD – JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB ASSIGNMENT: MUSEUM & VISITOR CENTER COORDINATOR 

JOB NUMBER: 34-0184

DEPARTMENT: 34 – Lehnis Train Museum & Visitor Center

PAY: $2,980-Month / $17.20 per hour 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Visitor Services Manager 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a full-time position and is scheduled to work 40 hours per week. This position requires the performance of a variety of routine responsibilities incidental to be the Museum & Visitor Center Coordinator for weekdays and weekend activities and meetings at the Lehnis Train Museum. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED: 1) Manage the gift shop operation to include ordering stock of items, inventory, processing transactions and selling museum admissions. Make budget recommendations based on gift shop purchases for both museum and visitor center; 2) Answer telephone calls and assist walk-in customers plan their visit. Take messages and give information about Museum and City of Brownwood; 3) Update Lehnis Railroad Museum & Visitor Center Facebook and Instagram pages in coordination with the City of Brownwood’s Communications Department; 4) Compose and type correspondence for customers regarding contracts, billing, and museum & visitor center activities; 5) Coordinate facility rentals to include tours with prospects, contracting, diagrams, and payments. Schedule staff to set up and work events; 6) Miscellaneous clerical duties such as deposits, petty cash, store inventory, ordering office supplies, P.O. requisitions, etc.; 7) Open and close exhibits, as needed. Provide support to museum staff during Family Day events, fundraisers, and programs; 8) Interact tactfully and professionally with the public and customers; 9) Work with local hotels and businesses to promote current events in Brownwood and surrounding area; 10) Assist the Visitor Services Manager with tourism related tasks such as Visitor Center operations, distribution of marketing materials and updates to website and social media channels as needed; 11) Perform other related duties as assigned by Visitor Services Manager.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None. 

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Indoors; pleasant; ability to sit, stand, and move about an office building, as well as working outdoors on the mini train ride. Employee occasionally lifts materials weighing up to 50 pounds or climbs in order to reach cabinets or shelves. Ability to bend and squat in order to file or retrieve information. May be exposed to electrical, mechanical, or chemical hazards when operating or maintaining equipment. Must have ability to see and handle small objects. Must be able to work evening and weekends as required. 

CONTACTS WITH OTHERS: Routine, frequent contact with the public; previous work experience in a position working with the public desirable but not required. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have enough education to read and write effectively for this position; must be able to comprehend and speak the English language; a high school diploma or G.E.D. is a plus but is not required; previous work experience in position working with the public desirable but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of standard museum operating procedures; Ability to effectively communicate with the public in a courteous, congenial manner, both in person and by telephone; Physical ability to lift, move and set up tables and chairs used within the facility; Must be neat in appearance; Basic skill in use of computer; Requires good personal hygiene, neat appearance, dependability, and conformance to acceptable dress code.
