We are seeking a full-time Registrar responsible for overseeing the registration, documentation, and preservation of Space Center Houston’s collections. This role ensures accurate and comprehensive record-keeping for all artifacts, including physical records and digital data. The Registrar plays a critical role in collections care, coordinating accession and deaccession processes, loan agreements, and compliance with legal and museum standards. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and expertise in museum registration and conservation practices. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Catalog, label, and document artifacts, ensuring all records are accurately maintained in both physical and digital formats.
- Research and document artifact history and provenance, including archival research.
- Maintain and update the collections database including all related records, such as loans, condition reports, locations, exhibitions, and insurance values.
- Prepare and submit incident reports related to collection care.
- Ensure compliance with museum registration practices and legal documentation requirements.
- Oversee the handling, storage, cleaning, and environmental monitoring of artifacts according to museum standards.
- Conduct regular condition assessments and coordinate conservation treatments of artifacts with specialists.
- Coordinate the accession and deaccession of collection materials in alignment with institutional policies.
- Oversee loan agreements, including documentation, correspondence, and shipping logistics.
- Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards for collections management.
- Maintain and update collections databases, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of records.
- Track and report environmental data (e.g., HOBO data) to monitor artifact conditions.
- Manage physical archives, including past exhibition records, correspondence, and research materials.
- Record and distribute collections committee meeting minutes.
- Develop and enforce policies and procedures for collections care and records management.
- Stay current with American Alliance of Museums (AAM) best practices and relevant laws governing museum procedures and collections management.
- Assist in emergency preparedness and risk management for the collection.
- Represent Space Center Houston professionally in interactions with donors, lenders, and stakeholders.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, a related field, or work experience in a similar or related position.
- Minimum of 3 years of Registrar experience in collections management, including documentation, preservation, and research.
- Knowledge of museum registration practices, artifact handling, and conservation techniques.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Proficiency in Axiell or other collections management databases preferred.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with project management tools such as ASANA is a plus.
- Familiarity with museum legal documentation, loan agreements, and compliance standards.
- Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairways, and negotiate close spaces with a maximum of 18” clearance and regularly lift weight of approximately 35 lbs. alone.
- Ability to kneel, bend and work at floor level as needed.

Salary Range: $56,000-$61,000/annually
