General Notes  

Texas Science & Natural History Museum is developing new exhibits, programs, and experiences that spark curiosity, promote belonging, and tell stories about Texas science and natural history. The Museum seeks an Education Associate to work with the Associate Director to coordinate operations of the museum’s Discovery Center.  

Purpose  

The Education Associate will work closely with the Associate Director on direction and priorities for Discovery Center staffing, programming, and public engagement. 

Responsibilities 

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Discovery Center and serve as the point of contact for visiting public as needed. 
  • Coordinate volunteer training and volunteer scheduling in collaboration with Education Coordinator to fit Discovery Center staffing needs. 
  • Assist the Associate Director and Education Coordinator with the development of museum curriculum materials.
  • Participate in educational programs, activities, and events on behalf of the museum.
  • Other duties as assigned.

   

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in the sciences or science education. 
  • At least one year of experience providing or administering science education programs. 
  • Broad knowledge of the science of paleontology.  
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Success working independently and as part of a team.  
  • Ability to interact and maintain productive working relationships with staff, students, visitors, and educators.  
  • Ability to learn quickly and be flexible. 
  • Experience taking ownership of projects and seeing them through to successful completion. 
  • Ability to undertake and complete tasks and exhibit individual initiative in meeting the functions of the position.  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • At least three years of experience providing or administering science education programs. 
  • Experience working in museums, nature centers, or other cultural institutions.  
  • Knowledge of the geological and paleontological record of Texas. 
  • Advanced skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications.  
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills.  

Salary Range 

$43,000 annual 

Working Conditions 

  • Extended periods of standing. 
  • Working at a desk and computer for extended periods, including repetitive use of a keyboard.  
  • Use of manual dexterity.  
  • Occasional climbing of ladders and stairs.  
  • Occasional lifting and moving 25+ lbs.  
  • Occasional work around electrical and mechanical hazards; heavy equipment. 

Work Shift 

  • 40 hours per week 
  • Tuesday through Saturday 
  • Some Sundays and special events required
