Position Description 

 

Position:    Assistant Preparator 

Reports to:    Senior Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs

Position Description 

The Assistant Preparator is actively engaged with the presentation of exhibitions and installation of artwork, including permanent collection objects and loans from outside organizations, in alignment with the Carter’s standards and mission. The Assistant Preparator will closely work with the conservation and registration departments with tasks relating to the preservation of the permanent collection.  

 

Responsibilities 

  • Under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs and the Senior Preparator and Preparation Lab Manager, assist with the installation, receiving, shipping, and general handling of works of art. 

  • Conduct scheduled gallery inspections to ensure that works of art are secure and properly displayed, and that the galleries and installation furniture are clean. 

  • Assist with exhibition lighting, cleaning, painting and/or refinishing of gallery walls, and furniture fabrication and refinishing. 

  • Assist with the fabrication of frames, crates, and text panels, labels, and other signage for museum galleries and building as directed. 

  • Maintain and track inventories, such as inventories for exhibition furniture, crates, and frames. 

  • Mat and frame works of art for exhibition and in preparation for photography and loans in accordance with art conservation standards. 

  • In collaboration with the conservation, registration, and curatorial departments, perform tasks related to art preservation, including matting, creating containers for books and works of art, phase boxes, and storage mounts. 

  • Provide technical assistance for approved projects for other departments.  

  • Assist registrars with receiving, packing, unpacking and storing works of art. 

  • Maintain standards, policies, and procedures stated in the museum’s collection management policy 

  • Assist department with the ordering of supplies as directed. 

  • Adhere to exhibition schedules and deadlines.  

  • Act as Museum courier as needed. 

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all sensitive museum information. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

None 

 

Skills and Requirements 

  • Must be able to safely handle delicate works of art. 

  • Knowledge of proper matting and framing with the standards of a fine art museum.  

  • Experience in the installation of works of art. 

  • Excellent mechanical skills; proficiency with hand and power tools. 

  • Working knowledge of acrylic fabrication, bending, shaping, etc.; construction and carpentry; use of cements, glues, pigments, bleaches, solvents, and cleaning agents. 

  • Ability to climb and work on ladders and scaffolding, able to lift 50lbs. 

  • Must be available for travel as required.

Qualifications/Education 

  • B.F.A. or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

  • One year of art museum or gallery experience preferred. 

Pay 

  • $24.80 per hour
