Job Title: Assistant Curator of Education for Public Programs

Salary range: $55,000 - $65,000 yearly

Job Summary: The Assistant Curator of Education for Public Programs plays a vital role in developing and implementing educational initiatives at the Modern. This position focuses specifically on creating and overseeing public programs that engage diverse audiences with the museum's collections and exhibitions. The individual in this role collaborates with curators, educators, and external partners to design and execute innovative programs that enhance the museum's educational outreach. 

The person in this position must be knowledgeable and passionate about art, past and present. They will cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with local artists, inviting them to participate in public programs, workshops, and exhibitions. Act as a liaison between the museum and the local artistic community, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and contributing to the museum's role as a cultural hub. 

This individual must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as duties require. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other responsibilities may be assigned as needs and opportunities arise. 

• Conceptualize, plan, and implement a variety of engaging public programs, including lectures, panel discussions, workshops, performances, and other events. 

• Develop strategies to attract and engage diverse audiences, including families, students, adults, and community groups. 

• Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages participation and interaction. 

• Work closely with curators, educators, and other museum departments to integrate educational components into public programs. 

• Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, including artists, scholars, and community organizations, to enhance program offerings. 

• Develop and coordinate specialized academic programs tailored for adult audiences, including lectures, seminars, and courses that delve into the academic aspects of modern art. Collaborate with other institutions, scholars, educators, and experts to ensure the intellectual depth and relevance of these programs. 

• Take on the role of Art Camp Director, overseeing the planning, organization, and execution of art camps catering to children aged 4-17. Develop age-appropriate and engaging curriculum, coordinate with instructors, and ensure a safe and creative environment for participants.  

• Recruit and hire summer Art Camp staff from local high schools and universities. 

• Create educational materials and resources to accompany public programs and exhibitions. 

• Attend off-site events as needed and be available for occasional travel requirements. 

• Establish and nurture connections with other art institutions in the area. Collaborate on joint initiatives, share resources, and explore opportunities for cross-institutional programming. 
  
  

Additional Responsibilities: 

• Implement evaluation mechanisms to assess the impact and effectiveness of public programs. 

• Use feedback and data to continuously improve and refine program offerings. 

• Assist in developing and managing budgets for public programs, ensuring cost-effectiveness and financial sustainability. 

• Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to promote public programs through various channels, including social media, press releases, and community outreach. 

• Stay current on trends in art education, museum programming, and audience engagement to bring innovative ideas to the institution. 
  
  

Qualifications: 

• Master's degree in studio art or art history. 

• Previous experience in developing and implementing public programs within a museum or cultural institution. 

• Previous classroom teaching experience in higher education, demonstrating the ability to convey complex artistic concepts and engage students in meaningful discussions about modern art. 

• Strong knowledge and passion for modern and contemporary art. 

• Excellent organizational and project management skills. 

• Effective communication and collaboration skills. 

• Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by program schedules.
