Instructors: Afsheen Nomai, PhD, Technical Director, Texas Archive of the Moving Image
and Laura Treat, Moving Image Preservation Librarian, University of North Texas.
Museums are the custodians of a wide array of legacy media formats, but many of us lack training in working with these materials. We can help ensure that these materials are preserved by learning to properly identify moving image formats, identify preservation priorities, and plan for their optimal long-term storage. When planning for a digitization project, it is important to know what questions to ask vendors. This workshop will provide you with an introduction to digitization equipment, the underlying processes of digitization, and how to manage digital video assets in relation to your institution’s goals and budget. This workshop will involve hands-on inspection of film and videotape materials. Please note that this is a beginner’s guide to managing archival moving image collections and will not cover advanced technological concepts related to moving image materials, digitization technologies, file compression, or digital asset management.
